Review: The First Angry Man

The First Angry Man

Author: Samuel King

Price: $ 2.00

Genre: Science Fiction, short story

Purchase: http://www.damnationbooks.com/book.php?isbn=9781615720675

Publisher: Damnation Books

What I liked: A very interesting and great short story tale of science fiction portions. King describes the future with the question of what would happen to the intelligent creations that the human race creates? The tale follows a man/creation dealing with his past, but will he come to terms? King can certainly describe the future well with a ton of technological advances, but gets into the raw emotions of his human characters. A story although short not to miss.

Book Blurb:

What will be the legal status of our intelligent creations? Will we treat them as equals, or will they remain forever enslaved?

The store had no “travel kits” in its inventory, so she could not suspend his cognitive functions during the trip to Kate’s. He would have to travel fully conscious, disembodied and “in the dark”: the most terrifying experience a sentient could face. When she told him, he whimpered. “Oh no, Claire. I can’t do that. My God, I just can’t.”

Review: Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire

Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire

Author: Jan Bowles

Author Website: http://www.janbowles.com/

Purchase: http://www.bookstrand.com/love-lessons-with-the-texas-billionaire

Genre: Romance, Contemporary

What I liked: With a cover remenicent of the movie, Giant. What is there not to like about Bowle's Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire. With a fiery character, Eva really tests sweet natured, charming Jack to the test. This is a beautiful love story and a story at it's best. The emotion, the scenes, characters are all connected. This story will have you laughing and crying literally like it had me. Bowel's is an author to add to your favorite list! Watch out for this one!

Book Blurb

English beauty Eva St. John is flown to Texas to shadow rugged billionaire oilman Jack McClaine, for the magazine article she is writing.

He has a reputation as a fast living, womanising rogue, who has quite literally come from the wrong side of the tracks. A self-made man who always gets what he wants.

Still nurturing a broken heart and a secret past she left behind her long ago, Eva intends to remain professional at all times. But will she be able to resist the inevitable sexual advances of the predatory Texan Jack McClaine? And will she really want to?

As a rule Jack McClaine never mixes business with pleasure, but for the beautiful and intriguing Eva St. John he will make an exception. Who is she really? And what is she running from?

"Why, Miss Eva St. John, I feel about as welcome as a skunk at a lawn party." Jack McClaine spoke as mild amusement played around his silver-grey eyes.

Eva eyed him warily. It was only two days since she had first laid eyes on the rugged Texan. Now his lithe, athletic frame perched on the desk, her desk. He looked every inch at home, as if he belonged there. Wearing a light grey suit, he seemed to think his very tall six-foot-three-inch frame had somehow a right to be there.

"Just what is going on, Mr. McClaine?" Eva folded her arms across her chest, her mouth compressed with indignation, as she waited for his answer. Her gaze was drawn inexorably to his, and like a laser it burned into her. Then as a smile spread from his eyes down to the deep dimples at the side of his mouth, she felt the breath escape from her lips in a silent gasp. Why did he have to be so damned attractive? She had to fight the sudden urge to push the stray hair back that had fallen forward across his forehead.

"Mr. McClaine, are you going to answer my question?"

"Hold on now, darlin’, I thought we were on first-name terms already." He smiled at her in amusement.

"No, we’re not." She slumped into her chair and glared up at him. "Andrew Jameson could shadow you for a month. Why do you want me? I won’t be a pushover, you know. I’ll certainly write exactly what I think."

He smiled easily and twisted around to meet her frosty gaze. "Now, why would I want Andrew Jameson to shadow me for a whole month? Live in my home. Share my food. Share my life. Why would I want him when I’d be much happier with you?"

Eva picked up a pen and pointed it at him. "You, Mr. McClaine, have a reputation. If you are expecting anything but a working relationship, then you are mistaken."

"Well, that’s settled then, honey."

She looked up watching the amusement play around his eyes. The creases channelled down to his mouth. "Don’t look so smug, Mr. McClaine. You may regret your decision to invite New Dawn magazine into your home. You may not like what I write. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. McClaine."

"Darlin’, I’ve never regretted anything in my life."

"I told you once before, Mr. McClaine, I’m not your honey, and I’m telling you now, I’m not your darling either."

He laughed. "Eva, it’s just a figure of speech. It don’t mean anything."

That afternoon a huge row developed with her boss, Simon Jessop, but he wouldn’t back down. If she pulled this off, he’d give her a raise. Even more than that, he’d give her a promotion. She wanted to know why he thought Jack McClaine specifically asked for her to do the article. His thoughts exactly mirrored her own. He had lifted his hands in the air, an expression of helplessness on his face, and said, "You’re a big girl, Eva. I’m sure you can handle yourself, and Jack McClaine."

Well, thanks!

Eva felt like a dish served up specifically for Jack McClaine’s pleasure. What’s more, her boss had handed her over on a solid silver platter.

Review: When I Remember Love by Trish Silver

When I Remember Love
by Trish Silver

Genre: Women's Fiction
Price: $19.95

What I liked
This book has a very interesting plot. It's essentially a "what if" story, written about an American-Idol-type star who meets the love of his life before he becomes famous, and marries her. While it had been categorized as a "romance novel", it may not appeal to traditional romance audiences, because the couple's romantic journey happens too quickly. But romance fans who are looking for something a bit different might just find this book interesting. On Trish Silver's website, someone referred to this as a "Marriage 101" book, and that's probably the closest explanation I can come up with. More than a story about a couple's journey through life into love, it's more about a couple's journey through love into life. It's a story about two people who have to face the hardness of life and live through it, together. I think this is an intriguing concept that Trish Silver has worked hard to get into the world. Picture your favorite American Idol in the lead role, and imagine the background story to their very public life. If you are an Idol fan, this is a book you might enjoy.

Book Blurb
At the beginning of “When I Remember Love” Aidan Price, an extremely talented singer and young pop star, is completing a European concert tour. Dozing on the drive to a final performance, he opens his eyes in shock as an out-of-control truck plows into his limo. Will Aidan and his career survive? Will his memories? Who will he remember, when he remembers love?

Anything You Can Do

What I liked
Loved, loved, loved the hero in this book. He's just enough Alpha to be attractive, but not so Alpha that he can't be realistically tamed. I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of the book, the tension throughout the beginning of the plot, and the eventual relationship that ensues. I found Marianne Stephens' writing to be engaging and her plotting to be coherent and smooth. The heroine was less a woman I wanted to hang out with than an interesting character, but the hero made up for whatever else I might not have enjoyed. I find most contemporary heroes to be far too preoccupied with sex to be attractive, but this guy understood himself well enough to know that there was something special about this girl that a weekend of hot sex wasn't going to cure. I thought the premise was cute, and the ending fulfilling. If you enjoy contemporary romances with a little steam to them, I think you will enjoy this book very much.

Book Blurb

When her daycare facility needs financial aid in order to offer the employees at Ryan Industries the best care for their children, Allison Minetti approaches the CEO, Jeffrey Ryan. After he fails to answer her requests for a partnership, Allison dares him to spend one week at the center. Jeff accepts the challenge and ups the ante by demanding her company for the weekend if he wins.

Instant mutual attraction leads to a week of seductive teasing and brief steamy encounters. Is there a way for them both to win? Or will someone's interference in their challenge lead to mistaken conclusions and pull them apart?

Allison thought she'd go crazy. Being stuck in an overheated elevator within kissing distance of a sexy, charming man, made her crave to purr like a kitten. The electricity charging the air between them should've been enough to jump-start the elevator.

As sanity warred with the fantasies marching through her brain, Allison scooted a short distance away from Jeff. She smoothed her skirt before pushing back the damp curls clinging to her forehead. Damn his kissable lips. Their closeness weakened her control and made her vulnerable.

"I wish they'd work faster." Exhaustion and the heat, coupled with embarrassment and passion, tore at her composure.

"So. One week with you and the kids. I won't be left alone with them, right?" A tinge of nervousness colored his question.

Allison laughed and then said in a nonchalant tone, "Absolutely not. I have to make sure they're taken care of in case you decide to escape."

A sly grin spread across his face. "Just checking. I wouldn't wanna whip them into shape and encroach on your territory."

A niggling doubt crossed her mind. When he'd accepted the challenge, she'd been positive he wouldn't be able to handle even one day in the daycare. Could he make it through a week?

"I've gotta stand up and stretch. Maybe the air from the vent will reach my head quicker that way." Jeff maneuvered his body into an upright position. "Hey, I think it's cooler when you stand." He offered his hand to Allison.

She grasped it, and prickles of heat raced up her arm. He gave a gentle tug and helped her up. Once standing, Allison wiggled her hand free and concentrated on yanking down her skirt. Doing something, anything, helped her forget his burning touch. "Yep, it's cooler this way." She fanned her face with her hand.

"Should we shake hands and seal our deal?" Jeff stretched out his hand to once again encase hers.

"Let me make sure I absolutely understand this. If you live through one week of daycare, all I have to do is accompany you around town for a weekend, no strings attached?"

He drew back his hand and placed it over his heart. "That's the deal and all I ask." He grinned and added in a sexy tone, "Unless you decide to change the rules."

Allison considered the realities of their agreement. Although confident she'd win, logic wormed its way into her assessment of their dare. Even if she lost, she'd be in his company. She could sneak her requests into their conversations, so it wouldn't be a total defeat.

"Hey down there! Grab onto something or hit the floor. I'm gonna start up the motor!"

With one huge grating sound, the elevator jolted and rocked into action, causing them to lose their balance. They stumbled as the car sped upward. Jeff landed in a sitting position.

Unsteady on her feet, Allison tripped and lost her footing. Jeff reached out, gripped her hips to stop her from falling backward, and pulled her down toward him. She landed with unladylike grace in his lap, renting inches of splits in her skirt seams as she straddled his body.

They grabbed onto each other, locked in an intimate embrace. Basic instincts took over. Her lips slid across his, and her hands wound into his curly hair. His tongue teased her into a frenzy of soul-searching kisses.

Jeff groaned and moved his head back to rest against the wall. "Wow. Very nice."

With her heart pounding, Allison reeled as she tried to regain her composure. His kiss left her panting for more. She missed hearing the elevator door open.

"I see you managed to occupy yourselves," a woman's voice stated.

Review: Bound By Love by April Dawn

Bound By Love
by April Dawn

Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Breathless Press
ISBN: 978-1-926771-26-7
Price: $4.95

What I liked
The premise of the book is very interesting. Unwilling daughter runs from tyrant father, gets accidentally kidnapped by hot pirate and then imprisoned for piracy. I like it. The plotting is sort of all over the place, through the middle, but it comes back around in the end. And the writing is generally good. There are some violent scenes in the prison that some readers might not find appropriate, but I didn't find it to be anything unbelievable. If anything, it made me concerned for the conditions of women's prisons around the world. The historical detail is good, and the hero was very sumptuous. The editing was distracting, at times, but that's hardly the writer's problem. I thought the writing quality was quite good. Indicative of talent, and potential. I would be interested to read more of April Dawn's historical romances. I think she's got a bright future ahead of her as a romance writer.

Book Blurb

Chloe Adderley is on the run from an unwanted marriage and a father who is far more dangerous than she realizes.

After finding herself with an ultimatum that she can't accept- marry the man or starve to death in her room- running to her grandmother's house in Italy seems the only thing to do. She will pretend to be a governess, and hire a ship to take her there. It is a flawless plan. When she is attacked and knocked unconscious, however, she never suspects that the man who finds her will mistake her for a harlot.

Captain Darion Bannon is dismayed to discover that the unconscious woman he has taken aboard is actually an innocent lady. When they find themselves falling in love, Darion admits that he is a Privateer for the Sons of Liberty. After being arrested for piracy, as the Crown calls it, they face a cruel prison and transportation to the Colonies. When they are finally able to relax and be together, her father sends a man to come after her, and Darion finds himself fighting to keep the woman he loves. Only their love can help them survive the cruel twists of fate.

“Leave me alone.” She said.

He looked into those windows that she called eyes, and saw fear, but he also saw the desire she had for him.

“You have bewitched me, my little beauty. I could no more leave you than I could leave my own body.”

He kissed her, using all the tricks and charm he possessed he would make her his, body and soul.

The kiss was so full of passion that it clouded her head. Her mind screamed out for her to fight, to bite him, and kick him, but her body rebelled. She melted in his arms as his body molded to hers. He released her hands, and she made one last attempt to stop this man who seemed to know just how to set her body aflame. He ignored her hands that pushed weakly at his chest, and kissed her cheeks, and chin. His mouth, and tongue roamed her neck, kissing, sucking, biting.

As he found her pulse, he began to suck at it. She felt a rush of pleasure flow through her, and heat started to emanate from the core of her. His hands roamed her breasts, and suddenly she felt the need to remove the chemise, to feel his rough callused hands on her. As if sensing her need, he rolled her on top of him, and removed it. She blushed as she realized that this man was making her submit to him, and she found her struggle to resist all the harder every time he touched her. Indignation filled her, and she started to move off him, but he flipped her under him yet again.

“Don't fight this, my beautiful little witch. You know you want this too.”

And she did, that is what scared her.

Review: Ellora's Cave Reviews

Title: Life Sentence

Author: Jennifer Dunne

Publisher: Ellora's Cave

What I liked:I really enjoyed the characters and the plot on this one. I totally felt for Samantha and what she went through and could understand why she would not let someone else control her. A sweet and sexy read!

Book Blurb:

Samantha Taylor expected the erotic art book to offer her an escape, not release Master Giacomo. Italian, hunky and a skilled Master, Giacomo is a triple-threat devoted to giving Sam the ultimate pleasure as his submissive.

Having let one man control her life, Sam will be damned if she’d let another do it, no matter how much he makes her body burn. But Giacomo is damned—and if he fails to dominate Sam, he really will go to Hell.

Title: Survivor

Author: Liddy Midnight

Genre: Fantasy, Romance

What I liked:This was one of my favorite books to read, not only because of the genre it's in, but because it was such an intriguing read. Liddy certainly knows how to teleport the reader into another place. This is exactly what happens to pilot Dough when he is transported to that are only in his dreams. But fantasy can't come true, right? Read the book to find out. Maybe dreams are a figment of our own realities.

Book Blurb:
After a horrific training accident with his fighter squadron, pilot Doug is transported to a world he’s seen in powerful sexual dreams featuring a mahogany-skinned beauty with silver hair. It can’t be real—people there become dragons at will. To his shock, he discovers he can transform as well.

Harna, the woman of his dreams, makes him feel welcome. The sex is mind-blowing but too much about this world defies logic. This must be another dream. Doug only knows he’s falling in love and if he’s right, he’ll have to leave Harna behind when he wakes up.

Title: Checkmate

Author: Katherine Kingston

Genre: Fantasy, Sci-fi

What I liked: An interesting and fun read from start to finish. I loved both characters of Devonne and Raje. It's an intense read from the get go as we find out the past and try to journey to the future of these two characters whom loved each other in the past. Will they free themselves and not end up in the labor camp? If you love fantasy, adventure, with a dash of sci-fi then you will love this book.

Book Blurb:

Devonne and Raje are space-going pirates who were lovers until a secret drove them apart. Some time later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to compete in an intense and drastic series of contests. The space pirates will have to find a way to work together or they’ll end up with a one-way ticket to an alien slave labor camp. As they grow closer and the danger rises, Devonne and Raje know that their desire and newfound love could tear them apart forever.

Title: Bareback Cowboy

Author: Carol Lynne

Book two in the Saddle Up and Ride series.

Genre: M/M, Spectrum

What I liked: Saddle up indeed, that's what you will do when you read Bareback Cowboy! I love a good western tale and this one brings just that along with lots of romance! I really enjoyed both characters, espically that of Bridger who is just a total cowboy at heart instead of a buisness man. Will Bridger and Ethan come together? Find out, grab this one!

Book Blurb:

Ethan Griggs is quite happy living on Justice River Ranch. He spends his days as head wrangler, tending to the horses he loves and the guests he’s learned to tolerate. When Bridger Collins arrives at the ranch, Griggs’ world is turned upside down. Despite his usual hands-off policy with the guests, he’s immediately drawn to the younger man.

Bridger thrives on the cowboy way of life. The son of one of the richest men in the country, Bridger would rather fix a fence than sit behind a desk counting his money. The sexual chemistry he seems to share with Griggs is simply icing on the cake.

With his week-long stay coming to a close, Bridger is forced to choose between the life he wants with Griggs and the life planned for him since birth.

Review: The Killer Within by Jason Kahn

The Killer Within
by Jason Kahn (website)

Genre: Paranormal Thriller
Short Release e-book (September 2009)
(available for Kindle)

Publisher: Damnation Books

What you liked:
I very much enjoyed the repartee between Frank and his partner. I found myself a couple of times having a throw-back to Lennie Briscoe on Law & Order. Loved the premise. I'll try not to give it away, but the "paranormal" part of the book is very subtle. It's not at all a vampire/werewolf/magic type of paranormal, which is what I'm used to. But I thought the whole concept of how Kahn wove the paranormal element into an otherwise very normal plot was excellent. Some of the writing was a bit clumsy at times and the passive voice ran a little rampant, but honestly, this was a great read, especially for a short book. I have a feeling, based on the end of the story (which I won't give away so you can read it for yourself), that there are yet to be further stories about Frank and his task force. Very interesting story. If you're a fan of "The Wire" or "Law & Order", you'll probably enjoy this book.

Book Blurb:
When Metro City’s number one crime family develops a drug that turns ordinary people into mindless assassins, detective Frank Arnold makes it his mission to bring them down. But things take a turn for the worse when the syndicate targets someone in the police department to carry out their next hit. Everyone’s under suspicion, including Frank himself as he tries desperately to crack the case before his time runs out, permanently.

Rating: 5 stars

What I liked

I loved the delightfully imperfect—in-her-own-eyes heroine. Too tall? Since the two brothers she met were not in the short category, no one but she and her mother thought this a problem. Ah, her mother. No, I didn’t like her, but her character was very important to the story. Business-minded Will and Playboy Ed looked at life differently.

When Will fell for Addie early—after she picked him up with an unusual proposition—I worried the story was over. No need, since the story got MUCH better! Mistakes not righted, trust issues, and a venomous ex-wife made the action amid sweet sex scenes touching. My own tears surprised me, especially when I began hoping for a happy ending. You will not be disappointed.

Book Blurb

Addie Winter is single—just one more reason for disappointment in her permanently disapproving mother’s eyes. There’s nothing she wants more than to be loved but when her own mother can’t bring herself to love her, she wonders if anyone can. What she needs is a man—real would be ideal, but she’ll settle for pretend. Anything to shut her mother up.

Will Mansell chokes on his drink when Addie offers to pay him to spend the night in her room. Tall, dark-haired and the epitome of Addie’s “hero”, he can’t believe his luck because women usually go for his blond-haired brother. Ed Mansell is a serial playboy with an electric smile who waltzes through life and through women. Lucky for Will and Ed, they don’t have the same taste in women. But that was before they met Addie.

Far from pretending, Will and Ed set out to prove Addie is worthy of love—but Addie finds too much love can be just as painful as none at all.

Review: Contract to Pleasure by Beverly Havlir

Contract to Pleasure
Book One of Pleasure Seekers
By Beverly Havlir

Genre: Erotic Romance Novella - Science Fiction (97 pages)

Price: $4.95 (available as an e-book only)

Release: January 2010

Publisher: Ellora's Cave

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked:
Can I just say that 97 pages is way too short a time to have spent with this amazing story?!? I could have done with another 200 or so. The hero, Kendrick, absolutely made my mouth water. There is something about a really well-written alpha hero that does that to me. Not a violent or angry man (well, and not really a man at all... he was an alien, after all), but definitely not afraid to go after, protect, and possess what he wants. And let's be honest, ladies, isn't there a place inside all of us that longs to be treated like that? I mean, he started a war for her. Like Helen of Troy, except the powerful king is also hot, well-built, and funny. His character was so endearing in his development, especially emotionally. Definitely a must-read. Whether you like science fiction or not. The unfamiliar worlds and settings might throw you off a little, but it is well worth it to get to watch this love story unfold. Very engaging love scenes, very well-written and holy HOT, hot. I also read that it was book one in a series, which means that there really will be a sequel. Can't wait!

Book Blurb
Caught between a rock and a hard man… Special Service agent Tamara Conway isn’t looking for love. She has a life, an important position. The last thing she needs is some hot and sweaty sex with a gorgeous, arrogant Bandarian messing up her life, even if he can kiss the legs out from under her. She certainly doesn’t expect to discover the infuriating man is the ruler of Bandar and the only one who can help thwart Federation Earth’s greatest enemy.

Kendrick has wanted Tamara ever since their first unforgettable encounter. With Earth needing his assistance, this is his chance to pick up where they left off. Kendrick agrees to help on one condition. Tamara will be his for one year. Shocked at the indecent proposal but facing the possible death of millions of people, Tamara agrees. If Kendrick thinks he’s getting a submissive woman, he’s in for a surprise. Tamara is no shrinking violet. A battle of wills ensues. An overwhelming desire binds them together. One year isn’t enough—Kendrick wants her for eternity.

Review & Interview: Jewels by Lakisha Spletzer

By Lakisha Spletzer

Genre: Paranormal/Science Fiction Romance

Price: $14.99

Release: February 2010

ISBN: 9781449502072
Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked:
The world-building in this book was very good. Spletzer obviously has not only a creative mind, but the ability to create intricate and interesting worlds. The main character had a unique perspective on her very unique world, and was a very interesting person to come through that world with. Honestly, I hate to harp on this, but I was very impressed with the level of world-building... and I keep mentioning it, because it's hard to do something that's even remotely unique anymore, but Spletzer succeeded in that arena. It's even harder to do world-building that is complex as well as readable. On the character front, Jewels and Dex were interesting, but my favorite character was Jeremy. The romantic side of the book was ultimately unsatisfying to me, mostly because I wasn't invested enough in the main characters. But I did enjoy the complexity of the different worlds and different races and intrigue and powers and danger. And I smell sequel... :-)

Book Blurb
Special Lieutenant Jewels Enbran, a human telepath unable to shield her mind from thoughts, uses telepathic anchors who protect her vulnerable mind. Her current anchor, Colonel Jeremy Lingley, is nearing burnout. An alien race is seeking an alliance with Earth and the pair are assigned the mission of discovering the aliens' secrets.

Crown Prince Dex LoudRoar is a Gatoan warrior and a royal with a terrible secret. His people wage a constant war against their enemy, the Lupinious empire. But the tide of battle is turning and his people seek help from a new source: the humans of Earth.

With an interstellar war looming, Jewels and Dex seek salvation for their planets and find their destinies changed forever.

Jewels laughed bitterly and choked down a sob. “Minimize stress? You sound so clinical! At this moment, I despise you, Colonel!”
“Jewels!” she heard him shout, but she ran from the med-center.
She tried to stop the tears of hurt from falling and failed. A tightness formed in Jewels' chest. Always before, her anchors had been eager to leave when the breakdown started. Jeremy knew what to expect, what signs to look for. Why did he wait so long?
“Stupid, Colonel,” she muttered and slowed to a walk. She angrily wiped away her tears. She had to get a grip. She had to be strong during the Choosing.
::Do you always have to be?::
Jewels froze. She knew that voice! She glanced about for Dex.
::Little human, do not fear me. I came to apologize.::
::Apologize?:: Jewels was confused. What did he need to apologize for? She felt his amused chuckle tickle her mind and it stirred her heart.
::You are indeed very fascinating. Look behind you, little human.::
Jewels heard his steps. Dare she turn and stare into those emerald green eyes? Eyes that promised her things that were denied her. Why him, why now?
His scent teased her nose and the air whooshed from her lungs. She had to see. She did a slow turn and stilled. Today Dex wore something similar to a Scottish kilt. It did nothing to calm her racing thoughts. His muscles were defined and powerful. His fur begged to be stroked and rubbed against.
“Oh,” Jewels whispered, embarrassed that she was ogling the Crown Prince of the Gatoan Empire. She couldn't seem to stop herself.
Dex's eyes glinted with mischief and other things. This female was different from any other. So fragile, yet he'd seen her soul and knew her purity. He was fixated on her.
“Am I pleasing to you?” He surprised himself, and her, by asking. But it was true. Dex had to know.
Jewels gulped and managed a breathy, “Yes.”
Dex grinned and moved closer. “I want to touch your...skin. So different from fur.”
“Yes,” Jewels agreed, her mouth dry. She wanted to touch him, too, and bury her face into his fur.
“Little human, you are unique.” He touched his paws to her face and felt a slight shock at the contact. He ignored it and enjoyed the smoothness of her skin.
His touch was electric, literally. She felt the jolt and then everything went quiet in her mind. An inner voice warned her that they needed to stop, but Jewels wasn't listening.
“Dex.” She raised a hand to touch him and paused, uncertain if he would welcome it or not.
He smelled her growing arousal. He saw the hesitancy. Did not females here take what they wanted when the heat raged in them? Dex took her hand, felt her stiffen and waited for her to relax before placing it on his chest. He purred when her fingers tangled in his fur and she caressed him. Dex looked in her eyes, eyes that had changed color to the emerald green of the forests on Felinia, and saw that intense longing. That hungry need.
Dex was confused. She shouldn't be this desperate if her bond-mate was taking care of her. He frowned and Jewels flinched. She dropped her hand and backed up, breaking the connection.
“We shouldn't! I, I can't. Please forgive me!”
“Wait, little human!” Dex called, but she'd run away. Frustrated, he glared at his paw as if it could provide some insights.

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself!
I was born in Wise County, Virginia and lived in a small town called Coeburn which is located in the southwestern corner of the state in the Appalachian Mountains.

What inspires you to write?
My children, my friends, life, good music and peanut butter no bake cookies.

Do you find that your muse takes over when writing?
My muse and my very determined characters take over when I write. It's a fascinating mix and battle of wills when that happens.

Tell us a bit about your book, Jewels? What inspired it?
Jewels is the story about a 19-year-old telepath, or psionic as they are called in the story, named Jewels Enbran, who meets the male who completes her. She has some rocky situations happen to her on the way to being with her man, but I think she would tell you it was worth it.
The story was actually inspired by a blog post I did where I was experimenting with the use of first person. I had used a different female name and personality but from it came the character of Jewels.

Do you have any have any other works in progress that you want to share?
I created a list of works in progress that I wanted to accomplish for 2010 and I don't mind sharing at all.
 1) “Moonbeams and Moonlight” - I've been working on since 2004. It's a high fantasy story that I really want to finish. It's sitting at a little over 50,000 words and I haven't even reached the stopping point for the first book.

2) “Mine Dreamer” was started in November 2009 during NaNoWrimo and I'll probably have it done by April. It is set in the same universe as “Jewels” but deals with civilians.

3) My other story, “Sierra's Protection,” was started in September 2009 and will be finished some time during the summer. It's my first time using normal people as characters. So no superpowers or magical elements in this one.
Others that I have on my writing desk that I'm hoping to get some writing done on are my 2010 NaNoWrimo project (don't know what it is yet) and the first of a middle grade fantasy series (untitled at the moment).

What would be your advice to aspiring writers out there?
Do not give up! I know life can kick you in the gut and often times causes discouragement, but if you truly believe in and enjoy what you're writing, you will find the strength to persevere and reach that dream.

What are your favorite books at the moment?
I tend to favor series as opposed to one book so here is the short list, Deviations series by Elissa Malcohn, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, Merry Gentry and Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton, Beast Master series by Andre Norton, Pern and The Talent series by Anne McCaffrey.
Did I mention that was just my short list? *winks*

What is your favorite word? Least favorite?
My favorite word that I use in my every day speech is "interesting." Even though there are a dozen synonyms for that one word, I seem bent on using it to describe any moment or topic that is fascinating to me.
Least favorite? Any curse word that a person treats as the only vocabulary they know.

Publisher: Moon Gypsy Press

What I liked: If you remembered how much I loved the first book in the trilogy, (Book One Review) then you know how much I loved the second one! I love Rhiannon's character as she is so into her world that she cannot imagine a world of magic until this dark, handsome man appears in her life, even then she isn't quite sure. Cerne wants her to help her, but he will succeed? You will just have to find out! Go pick up this read, I promise it will be worth it. Skye is an author to watch for!

Passion and peril aside, will Rhiannon and Cerne discover their true destiny?

The Interview

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself!

I currently live in a small suburb outside of Grand Rapids, MI. I like to think I live a somewhat normal life. Besides the writing, I work full time as a help desk representative. I’ve got a boatload of hobbies that I enjoy as well, including arts and crafts, ceramics, wood burning, and I dabble in web and graphic design.

What inspires you to write?

I love telling stories. I’ve always written since I was a child. By the time I was a Senior in High School, I knew I wanted to become a published author. And—umm—several years later, here I am.

Do you find that your muse takes over when writing?

At times he does. Most the time I don’t agree with his decisions, then when I go back and re-read what I wrote it’s spot on. Now if I could just motivate Mr. Muse to cooperate with me on my next project.

Tell us a bit about your book, Wings of Desire? What inspired it?

I’ll post the blurb, if that’s okay?

A fairytale, but not the kind your mother used to read you!

Rhiannon Kinsley's life goes from boring to downright crazy when a freak lightning bolt strikes her laptop. To make matters even more bizarre, strange words and symbols flash across the computer screen and she hears a mysterious voice. Time to call the men in white coats! Then Cerne Silverwing, an intriguingly sexy man, appears. He insists she’s a faerie princess whose fate will determine his own. What a crock! Now she knows who really needs those white coats.

With the Dark Faerie forces threatening his kingdom, Cerne kidnaps Rhiannon and brings her to Fey, a land where magic knows no bounds. Despite their differences, the two are thrust together to defeat the whip-wielding Dark Faerie Queen before she takes over the kingdom. Passion and peril aside, will Rhiannon and Cerne discover their true destiny?

If you couldn’t already tell, I’m somewhat of a geek. I love computers and technology. Back in the day, I spent *massive* amounts of time on the internet and chat rooms. So much so, my parents were ready to put me in a 12 step program. One night, I noticed that most everyone in the chatroom (myself included) had names of gods and goddesses. I chose the name of the Greek goddess of harvest, Demeter. Anyhow, I started playing what-if scenarios in my mind. What if the chatter was on the computer in a thunderstorm. What if the computer she was on got zapped by lightning. What if the energy of the surge sent her back to ancient Greece. Mr. Muse then reminded me of this brainstorm about ten years later. We then realized the woman in the chat room wasn’t a Greek goddess. It was a Celtic goddess. Then BAM she wasn’t a goddess at all. She was a faerie princess.

Do you have any have any other works in progress that you want to share?
I’ve just sold a series of 4 humorous paranormal romances to Sourcebooks. The first book, about a half-succubus hairstylist will be available in Spring of 2011. They’ll be written under the name Sidney Ayers.

What would be your advice to aspiring writers out there?

Never give up. Keep on writing and submitting. Also, I’m quite fond of this saying (I’ve added my own flair to it): “Write what you love. Love what you write… Otherwise no one else will, either!”

What are your favorite books at the moment?
I love all sorts of books. Historical romances, urban fantasy, paranormal (especially if humorous). I’m currently reading Proof By Seduction by Courtney Milan and Gentlemen Prefer Succubi by Jill Myles. Both are great in their own special ways.

What is your favorite word? Least favorite?
My favorite word is discombobulated. I just like how it sounds. LOL. As for the least favorite words, well, I don’t think they’d be appropriate for an interview. :-)

Dear Friends, Family, and Righteous Supporters,

This April, the nonprofit Office of Letters and Light will be bringing together the most mighty of endurance scriptwriters for an event that will define our generation forever.

I'm speaking, of course, of Script Frenzy. It's a global writing challenge in which participants spend April (and portions of our sanity!) writing a 100-page script in just 30 days.

I will be among the participating scriptwriters this year. In addition to my writerly duties, I'm raising money to help Script Frenzy's parent nonprofit, the Office of Letters and Light, continue to put on free creative writing programs for kids and adults in classrooms, communities, and libraries around the world.

Every dollar I raise will keep my spirits high as I write. More importantly, your contribution will help Script Frenzy and its Young Writers Program create a more engaged and inspiring world.

Review: Damned and Desired by Kathy Kulig

Damned and Desired
A sequel to Desert of the Damned
By Kathy Kurig

Genre: Contemporary Paranormal Erotic Romance (Shapeshifter)

Price: $5.95 (available as an e-book only)

Release: January 2010

Publisher: Ellora's Cave

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked:
Fantastic book. I always love when authors who write erotica manage to make the sex integral to the plot. Otherwise, I can often get bored with it. But Kulig made the most imaginative alternate world I've ever read in an erotica novel. Very creative, very interesting. Plus, I see that she has a prequel to this book, as well as another on the way. I definitely plan to read both of those books. I thought the character development was stellar, the plotting kept me engaged the whole time, the world-building was fantastic. I just can't get over how creative this whole premise was. And each of the characters was very distinctive. I would highly, highly recommend this book to you if you like paranormal erotic romance. Really, an amazing book. My congratulations to Kathy Kulig on a great piece of work. Looking forward to more from her.

Book Blurb

Physician’s assistant Brad Montag is drawn to Sakari’s lustful advances with a blazing desire he can’t explain, unaware of how dangerous she is. No matter how enticing, she’s a complication he doesn’t need until he can conquer his past and regain control of his shapeshifting abilities. Sex this wicked and good can only lead to disaster. When immortals from an alternate dimension try to free their exiled world, Brad is caught in the middle of a battle that could destroy not only him, but the land he loves.
Reader Advisory: This book offers a bit of bondage for your BDSM pleasure, as well as secondary characters getting down with a little M/M/F fun of their own.

Review: A Date with Mr. Wonderful by Lynn LaFleur

A Date with Mr. Wonderful
Second book in the Lavender Lace Series
By Lynn LaFleur

Genre: Contemporary Erotic Quickie

Price: $4.45 (available as an e-book only) ISBN: 978-1-41992-635-8

Release: January 2010

Publisher: Ellora's Cave

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked:
This was an interesting book. It was a nice, quick read with a lot of sexy scenes. The lingerie store (owned by a Celtic goddess and her god lover) has been in a previous story of LaFleur's, and I do generally enjoy series with repeating characters. I would prefer that the characters were part of the love story. But it's very creative. I enjoyed the story, in general. I did appreciate that it was a contemporary setting, and one that I recognized (Seattle, WA). I thought the sex scenes were well-written and the characters were as well-developed as they could be in 90+ pages. So, all in all, a good read. If you're really into lingerie, I would highly recommend this book. The lingerie played almost as important a role as anything else in the book. :-)

Book Blurb

A shopping spree at Lavender Lace, a lingerie store owned by Celtic goddess Ashlyn, thrills Twyla Gardiner, who has trouble finding sexy lingerie to fit her tall, voluptuous body. But who will get to appreciate that lacy red bra and risqué thong? Twyla’s friends seem determined to set her up with new men every week. When her best friend arranges yet another blind date with a man she swears is Mr. Wonderful, Twyla decides she can’t go through another disappointment. She escapes to a favorite hideaway spa. Daniel LaFevers is new in the Seattle area and hasn’t had the chance to meet many women. One look at the voluptuous raven-haired beauty sitting in the bar of the locals’ favorite hideaway and Daniel knows he has to get to know her better. When Twyla invites Daniel to her room for an evening of unforgettable passion, will this be another in a long line of disappointments, or a date with Mr. Wonderful?

Guest : Heather Kuehl & Character Development

Promises Banner.jpg

Character Development by Heather Kuehl

When I sit down to write, I have to think of a lot of things; setting, plot, and most importantly, characters. A story is nothing without believable characters that the reader can relate to. They have to have faults, back-story, things that will keep the reader either rooting for them or hoping for their demise. I wrote the original draft of Promises to Keep back in 1999. Back then I was just learning how to write stories, and the novella I produced was interesting to say the least. I let it sit until 2006, when National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.org) helped me give it the jumpstart it deserved. It wasn’t the plot that was lacking, it was the characters. Characters can make or break a story, and in the case of my original draft it was killing them. I needed to tweak them, and I’ll explain who they were, what I changed, and how it made them better.

Originally set in a high fantasy world, Starlette started out as a shapeshifter who came home to find her entire family dead and went to seek revenge from Drea. Starlette, at the time, was too nice to do the wicked deed that she had set out to do. With that character, the story went no where. Yeah, her family was dead but she grew up a very humble life where she reacted to their deaths by a lot of crying. I needed something more to turn her into the vengeful woman she is now. So I kept her family alive, having her father kidnapped by Dreashae instead of being killed by her. Did you notice the Dark Lady’s name change? More on that in a minute.

Starlette needed a goal, and vengeance didn’t look very good on her. However, it looked fantastic on Sivad. In the original draft, Sivad was a sorcerer who also lost his entire family to Drea. He wanted revenge and, for some reason still unknown to me, teamed up with Starlette to get it. Because I didn’t know his reasons, and in the original draft it was his idea to go with Star, I decided to flip it. In Promises to Keep Starlette implores his help, subtly threatening to hurt him if he doesn’t. Now there’s a way to motivate a character to go on this journey. He was also demoted from being a sorcerer to just plain human. His powers had never gotten them anywhere so why should he have them? I hate filler, and his powers were just that. Good bye sorcery. Which left a problem with Drea.

In my original draft her name was Drea, but in Promises to Keep it evolved into Dreashae. Drea wanted to rid the world of sorcerers and shapeshifters, hence killing both Sivad and Star’s families. Why? Who knows, it just seemed like a fun way to get a story going. And near the end, because I realized that she wasn’t the bad guy I wanted her to be, I had her go crazy and develop a second personality. It was all sorts of bad. Her character was the one that needed a facelift the most. I didn’t want a sympathetic bad guy, so giving a back story about how a sorcerer and a shapeshifter had done her wrong was not going to happen. So I thought long and hard about it and decided to have her kidnap Starlette’s father out of vengeance. In the first chapter the reader learns why. In the first NaNoWriMo draft of Promises she was a faerie noble, but I didn’t like how that worked in her world so I changed her into a sorceress. Now she had power; power corrupts making her into a believable bad guy. With so much about her changing I didn’t feel like she was just Drea anymore. She seemed more than that, so I added the –shae at the end of her name. Dreashae seemed more appropriate for a powerful sorceress.

While so much changed, a lot stayed the same too. Dragonsclan is almost identical to my original draft. I tweaked it so that Star is right in the middle of everything, as is appropriate when a story is in first person.

With every change I made, the story got better. It’s something that a writer needs to learn early on; Don’t get attached to your first, or even your second, drafts. Changes will have to be made and many times it’s for the better. Had I never fixed Promises to Keep, then it would have never seen the light of day. Which would have been a shame, believe me.

A Pen & Muse Review: MARDI GRAS

What I liked

The author filled a great first chapter with the set-up explaining the conflict between lovely Mia and the man she works for, Ty. She has loved Ty from afar for years. Ty has known her since she was his best friend’s little sister, and doesn’t see her as anything more than an employee he calls “sweet thing”.

I agree with Mia’s decision to pursue Ty by keeping her identity a secret behind a Mardi Gras mask. She wants desperately to enjoy one night of hot, sweaty sex with the man, but does not want to jeopardize their working relationship. Bondage, black leather, whips, and anal pleasures fill this book. The sexual encounters are VERY hot. A lovely romance ensues.

Book Blurb

Mia Sanderson has been in love with her boss, Ty Brewer, for years, but ladies’ man Ty only sees her as a friend and even worse, a good girl. So when Mia and Ty are invited to the same Mardi Gras party, Mia decides to live out a fantasy. Donning a Mardi Gras mask and wig, Mia masquerades as the seductive Mistress Mina, the bad girl of Ty’s dreams. But what will happen if Ty discovers her true identity? Mia’s risking their friendship and her job, but for a night with Ty, it’s worth it.
